In 2008, the company published a paper demonstrating their technology’s ability to efficiently sequence whole genomes via short reads. Illumina’s method is commonly known as “sequencing by synthesis.” While the label could technically be applied to other methods, including Sanger’s, which also indirectly assesses sequence by detecting the incorporation of nucleotides complementary to the template strand, it’s most commonly used to refer to Illumina’s chemistry.
