Lisp machines of the day were not a different architectural alternative to "von Neumann machine". They had RAM, disk, cpu, some peripherals attached to them. Basically a high-end workstations that just happened to have an OS written in Lisp, and bunch of user's program also implemented in Lisp, a lisp compiler, and so on.
