Starlink also enhances the U.S. missile defense system by improving space-based interception capabilities. The space-based missile defense system is a crucial component of the U.S. national missile defense system. Historically, the United States has attempted to use space-based weapons to enhance ballistic missile interception capabilities. In the 1980s, the U.S. proposed the Star Wars plan, centered on developing a space-based missile defense system to automatically identify and destroy incoming ballistic missiles, protecting the United States from massive nuclear attacks by adversaries.40 During the George H.W. Bush administration, the U.S. proposed the Global Protection System, aiming to build a space-based kinetic energy intercept system centered around “Brilliant Pebbles.”41 However, these projects failed due to financial pressures and technological limitations at the time. Starlink, with its low-cost, large-scale low Earth orbit small satellite cluster, large communication bandwidth, low latency, real-time data transmission, visual payloads, and autonomous orbit change capabilities, further enhances the feasibility of kinetic collision-based interception of intercontinental ballistic missiles.
